UGK Sudbury School empowers children with an individualized program for each child that gives them the opportunity to pursue their passions & dreams in an environment of freedom, respect, & responsibility.

Cultivating Creative, Self-Directed Learners

Authentic Democracy

The Sudbury model of education is founded upon the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When children are given those same rights, they are empowered by the responsibility that comes with freedom.   Students and staff each have one vote and with their vote make the rules and manage the day-to-day activities of our school at our weekly school meetings.  Students and staff also participate in our judicial committee for the purpose of conflict resolution and judicial process.

Our students are given the opportunity & responsibility to make meaningful decisions both for themselves and their school community.

Individualism

Every child is unique with their own needs & challenges, interests & passions.  Unlike modern education, we meet students where they are and stay with them as they grow and learn.

Freedom

We trust students to direct their own learning and decide how to spend their time all day, every day.  When given the freedom to choose their own interests, activities, and pursuits, students are internally motivated, committed, and responsible in their learning process.

Responsibility

With freedom comes responsibility.” Eleanor Roosevelt

The Sudbury model of education gives students the power to be responsible both individually and as a community.  Within the school meeting and judicial committee, students & staff make the school rules and manage daily activities together as a true democracy.  Students are responsible not only for themselves but also for their school community which cultivates a healthy, respectful, and compassionate environment.

“The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.”

― Denis Waitley

“The primary goal of real education is not to deliver facts but to guide students to the truths that will allow them to take responsibility for their lives.”

― John Taylor Gatto

Yearly Requirements

Idaho requires the following number of school hours:

  • Kindergarten – 450 hours/yearly
  • Grades 1 through 3 – 810 hours/yearly
  • Grades 4 through 8 – 900 hours/yearly
  • Grades 9 through 12 – 900 hours/yearly

Students can be picked up and dropped off at any time between the hours of 6:30 am and 6:00 pm. However, before and after school care does not count for the yearly required hours (see below).

Only school time hours will be accrued for the yearly total (8:30 am – 4:30 pm)

Students may attend the state-required number of hours throughout the year at their convenience. Of course, we encourage and welcome students to spend more than the required amount. There is no maximum number of hours.
